Innovation in Public Spaces: Libraries

in collaboration with Sharon Londong and John Paul Kruepper

Project Description:

Iterate on innovative ideas for library book recommendations to the public.

B.O.A.R.

Book-Oriented Augmented Reality

A new interactive and imaginative way to receive book recommendations in the library through augmented reality. Using the personalized interface, one can journey their way through the library by following the AR path and tour guide. Along the way they are greeted by characters from suggested books and start on a new path following those characters.

One experiencing B.O.A.R. would start by scanning a QR code coordinating to a certain book genre. Using AR and their mobile device or their parent’s mobile device, the user will see a pathway and characters/icons pop up on their phone. The user will follow the path through the library to the location of the book recommendation on its shelf.

As you move through the library, the path will glow on your phone. As you pass different rows of shelves, characters will be fighting for your attention (in a nice, not overwhelming way). The visualization example is for children’s book but this program is not limited to children. It can be used for adults genre’s and even movies or museum exhibits. Once you get to the end of the path, the desired book will glow on the shelve, ready for you to pick it up.
